Ferdinand Has To Prove Himself To Fergie

Posted by Keano! on May 20, 2009

Manchester United and England centre back, Rio Ferdinand, has bee told by manager Sir Alex Ferguson that he has until the weekend against Hull City at The KC stadium to prove his fitness as the defender has missed United’s last three games due to a calf strain.

Ferdinand who lifted the Champions League trophy last season (with Ryan Giggs) is unlikely to feature in the final in Rome should he fail the fitness test, allowing Northern Irishman Johnny Evans to slot in alongside Nemanja Vidic.

Speaking to the media today, boss Fergie said,

“I am hoping Rio will be fit for Sunday. If not then he’s doubtful for Wednesday. I think he needs a game. To go into a Champions League final without playing for three weeks might be a bit much,” said Si Alex

“The plan is for him to start training with the team on Thursday. Once he starts on the football training we will have a better idea about his availability for Sunday. So hopefully he will be fit.”

When questioned on Johnny Evans ability and how he would fair in such a big game as the Champions League final, Ferguson claimed,

“I’d have no problem with it,” stated Fergie “I wouldn’t be bothered one bit about selecting Jonny for the final. He has had a fantastic season, the kid. He is 21, and he’s much like Gerard Pique,  they grew up together here. It’d be a fitting tribute to our Academy if both players played in the final. It’d be a nice touch.”

Ferdinand is expected to be the biggest name playing at the KC on Sunday as United will look to rest most if not all their key men. One doubt remains over Cristiano Ronaldo, as the winger is level on goals with Nicholas Anelka for the top scorer, so the Portuguese may want to pull ahead on Sunday. 45 minutes maybe?
