Ferguson Rues Selling Pique

Posted by Keano! on May 21, 2009

The Spaniard was sold to the La Liga side last Summer after showing signs of annoyance at the lack of first team football. Barcelona snapped up the man who had spent a while at the club when he was younger for a cool €5M.

Pique has been an integral part of the Catalan’s defence this season, and the ex-Man Utd man is sure to start in Rome against his former employer’s.

Ferguson always admired Gerard when he was at United, but since he couldn’t promise the talented youngster regular first team action, his hand was forced to sell.

Speaking to SkySports on the final itself, Fergie commented about Pique,

“I have always liked the boy. I did expect him to reach this level so quickly,” started Ferguson, quoted by Sky Sports.
“He has fantastic qualities but most importantly, he has a good self-determination about him. He is a winner and a good professional.
I always thought he would do well. We were disappointed to lose him but we understood at the time that his family desire was to go back to Barcelona.
He looked at Ferdinand and Vidic and wanted to be in the first team immediately.
“I can understand why he wanted to go back to Barcelona. We wished him well at the time but we don’t wish him well on Wednesday.”

That last piece being the most interesting. Ferguson already stated that he doesn’t like things coming back to bite him and hopefully for us United fans Pique will be collecting a losers medal in six days time.
