Rome 09: United Unveil Pre-Match Mosaic

Posted by Keano! on May 22, 2009

Manchester United and Stretford End Flags (SEF) confirmed today that before the kick-off of the Champions League final in Rome next week, they will have another mosaic covering their end as the teams emerge for their final game of the season.

Last season, United portrayed the “BELIEVE” message in both their semi-final game at home to Barcelona and in Moscow when they played Chelsea in the final. They have however decided to change the message this time around and all United fans I have spoken to so far are very happy with the final decision.

Stretford End Flags were given permission to have a mosaic reading “FOR SIR MATT” with an image of the great mans face alongside it. It commemorates Sir Matt Busby’s birth 100 years ago. Sir Matt delivered European success for United in ‘68 and now Sir Alex is on the brink of sealing successive honours.

Below is a mock up of what we think is the final design, although while the text and graphics are accurate, styles, positioning and size are more then likely going to change.

It really will be some sight in Rome and sure to be one of the memories of the final. Speaking on the issue after confirming the plans, David Gill said,

‘We wanted to do something to mark Sir Matt’s 100th birthday and we were approached by the fans with an idea that would recognise the role he had played in the club’s unique place in Europe’

‘Alex liked the idea straight away. The mosaic will remind millions of people around the world what a great man Sir Matt was.’

As another mark of respect from United, they have invited Busby’s son and daughter, Sandy and Sheena to be a part of their corporate guests in Rome for the final along with attending a meal with directors on the Tuesday. When learning of the news, Sandy Busby remarked,

‘It’s going to be really heart-rending when the mosaic is lifted up, and I’m sure there are going to be a few tears from my sister and myself.

‘My dad would have been so proud and pleased. He was a sentimental man and he would be absolutely delighted that the fans still remember him with such affection and still sing songs in his honour. But this is something else, he will be the proudest man in heaven.’

Below is the mock up of the 16,000 piece mosaic planned by Manchester United and Stretford End Flags.

What do you think of the plans?
