Hull City 0-1 Manchester United

Posted by Keano! on May 24, 2009

This was a game all about Hull City where the Champions had the luxury of fielding a completely revamped team while having only the pressures of a Champions League final ahead.

Hull needed to match or better Newcastle United’s score line at Villa Park and despite loosing at home to United, they stayed up in the Premier League, as Newcastle United went down to Villa by one goal, and that goal being an own goal by Damien Duff.

Massive changes for our team anyways and probably more then what we expected. No Rio Ferdinand who we were expecting to see get in some game time before Rome and no Cristiano Ronaldo who ended up loosing the Golden Boot to Nicholas Anelka. The United team was filled with youth, but had the wise old heads of Neville, Brown and Gibson amongst the rest. Richie De Laet, Rafael Da Silva, Nani, Gibson, Welbeck, Macheda and Lee Martin all started in a game United had little interest in really.

Well after a fairly even opening which saw Macheda have a few good touches, and Hull generating some decent chances, Darron Gibson smashed in a contender for goal of the season. An over hit cross by Nani was retrieved on the touchline by Kiko and the Italian pulled the ball back to Gibson who looked up, saw nothing on, so smashed the ball toward the far post and it had Myhill beaten all ends up and it was an absolute kick in the teeth for the Hull fans, because at that stage, they dropped into the relegation zone.

Macheda wasted a great chance moments later when a Nani cross was hit straight at the ‘keeper and the tide was turning redder and redder with each passing minute. Credit to Hull though who stemmed the tide and Nick Barmby and Geovanni threatened throughout with the game drawing to a nail biting finish for Hull City supporters listening to hand held radios and eagerly texting and calling friends to get the latest on proceedings at Villa Park.

Congratulations to Hull for staying up but as for us, this game will be forgotten sooner rather then later as we have bigger fish to fry.

Roll on ROME!
