Rome 09: Ferdinand May Start

Posted by Keano! on May 25, 2009

Rio Ferdinand didn’t play against Hull at the KC, when he was expected to feature in order to boost his fitness and get in some game time before the Champions League final in 2 days. Ferguson had stated that if Rio couldn’t prove his fitness, then he would not play against the Spanish champions, Barcelona.

Ferdinand has been out of the team since the second leg against Arsenal in the Champions League semi-final with a calf strain and has since missed four league games against Manchester City, Wigan Athletic, Arsenal and most recently, Hull City.

Ferguson said it was a difficult situation, but he was fortunate that Rio was a “natural athlete” and believes he will feature in Rome alongside Serbian, Nemanja Vidic.

"Rio is coming along fine. He trained on Saturday and today with the other players who were also training. I think he’s on course to play on Wednesday,” said Fergie

On the injury front, Rafael and Wes Brown were slight concerns after the Hull game but Sir Alex believes that both should be okay for the trip United are making today.

"I took Rafael off and we’ll get him checked on Monday, but hopefully he’ll be OK. Wes got a little knock, but given that it was his first game back after so long out we’re thankful he’s come through well overall."
