Rome 09: UEFA Confirm Referee For Final

Posted by Keano! on May 25, 2009

UEFA confirmed earlier that Swiss referee, Massimo Busacca will the the man with the task of overseeing the biggest club game of the year as Manchester United and Barcelona meet, on Wednesday at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Busacca who has an impressive CV in terms of refereeing will take charge of his first ever UEFA Champions League final, and he’ll be hoping he won’t be a talking point the next day.

A statement from UEFA read,

“Busacca has been chosen by the UEFA Referees Committee to take charge of the Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United.

“He will be assisted by his fellow countrymen, assistant referees Matthias Arnet and Francesco Buragina. The fourth official will be Claudio Circhetta, also from Switzerland.”

So its an all Swiss affair in terms of the officials and Busacca has been the man in the middle for this fixture before, taking charge of last seasons semi-final first leg at the Nou Camp where he awarded Manchester United a penalty early on which Cristiano Ronaldo hit wide.

He also refereed the Porto and Manchester United game at the quarter-final stage of this seasons Champions League which saw United run out 1-0 winners thanks to a Ronaldo thunderbolt.
