Rome 09: Rooney Is The Key – Iniesta

Posted by Keano! on May 26, 2009

Barcelona star, Andreas Iniesta and scorer of the goal that has them in the final tomorrow believes that United’s number 10 in Wayne Rooney may hold the key to United winning the Champions League for the second season running.

Iniesta who was a doubt for the game earlier in the week leading up to the final is expected to play after taking part in a light training session after picking up a slight knock on his thigh.

The silky midfielder is amazed by the Englishman’s work ethic and desire to do what is best for the team. Whilst Rooney is a forward player, he will give up on getting goals to help the team out defensively and Sir Alex is tipped to play Rooney on the left side against Barcelona.

Iniesta said,

“What I value most about the way they play is how hard players like Rooney work,” he said.

“He was filling in at left-back against us last year in the semi-final. Finals are not usually very tactical. We can plan a million things before the game but in the second minute they can striker and all the plans go out the window.

“We cannot commit any mistakes because they have so much firepower up front.”

Rooney’s former teammate in Gerard Pique shares Iniesta viewpoint on the bullish attacker having spent a few years with him. He realises that Rooney offers so much more to the team then just the goals and people should notice that rather the commenting on his fewer goals.

“When he is focused he is simply unstoppable,” stated Pique.

“I have never seen a player as powerful as Rooney, the way he goes past people, the intensity of his play, the runs he makes from the first minute to last and the shot that he has. World class.

“Perhaps he does not get the credit he deserves because he should score more goals, but he offers so much.”

Rooney is a dead cert to start for United and make a second successive Champions League appearance for the Red Devils.
