Roo Wants To Be Center Of Attention

Posted by Keano! on June 5, 2009

Wayne Rooney has spoken out of his desire to play in a central role for Manchester United. The number ten has always believed he plays his best stuff right behind a front man or up front spearheading the teams attack. However, it hasn’t always panned out that way for Wayne as Sir Alex Ferguson, despite saying last Summer he’d play Wayne in his best position, opted to put the bullish attacker out wide left and sometimes wide right as the season progressed. Rooney had to fill in on the left wing for United in their Champions League final too.

Some will say Rooney’s best ever performances wearing the colours of United was when he had his partner in crime, Ruud Van Nistelrooy alongside him, or Shrek and Donkey as they were so tastefully nicknamed. Wayne has done well of late though notching up 61 goals for the Red Devils in his last three seasons.

Speaking ahead of his World Cup Qualifier against Kazakhstan with England, Rooney had this to say on his positional preferences,

“The position I play for England is the one I like playing most,” commented Rooney. “I haven’t played that position for a while for United. When you’re playing out on the left you have responsibilities to get back a bit more. Sometimes that takes away a bit of energy from your attacking.

“It’s the manager’s choice. I’ve always said my best position is playing up front. Maybe I need to be more selfish to get the role I want,” he added.

Rooney scored 20 times for United last season in what was his best goals to games ratio since he joined the club, and for being a player with a tag of not being a prolific goal scorer, its an impressive tally from the 23 year old.

It comes as no surprise to hear he is one of the fans favourite players.
