United Set To Spend Big?

Posted by Keano! on June 13, 2009

Controversial owners of Manchester United, the Glazer’s, have produced a rare statement saying they are fully behind Sir Alex’s plans for the team and have funds ready and available for the Scot to use as he pleases.

With Cristiano Ronaldo’s pending £80M transfer to Real Madrid, United will be showing some impressive balance sheets for the season gone by with the revenue raised from merchandising, TV rights, competition successes and now, transfers.

The most common names being thrown about the fan forums and media a like include, Antonio Valencia (Wigan Athletic), Frank Ribery (Bayern Munich), Karim Benzema (Lyon), Samuel Eto’o (Barcelona) and finally Carlos Tevez who is currently out of contract with United after his 2 year loan deal finished after the Champions League final in Rome.

Whoever it maybe to come in, the Glazer’s are set to back it,

"Only the paranoia of some supporters would lead you to believe the owners are not going to continue investing in the team," read the statement.

"A substantial number of world-class players have been brought to the club in the past few years and that will still be the case.  Sir Alex Ferguson is in total control of his squad. He is empowered to make whatever decisions he thinks are in the best interests of Manchester United. That continues to be the case. The fact is Cristiano Ronaldo decided, after six years, that it was time to move on and the manager said OK.

"The idea that United are motivated by a debt burden is just not true. It is not an issue.”

Antonio Valencia does look like a dead cert to be playing at Old Trafford in red next season after developments with Wigan have progressed well. It’s believed United offered around £17M for the Ecuadorian’s services and Wigan have admitted the move is very likely.

It’s thought that the deal will be moved along swiftly this coming week as United look to re-shape the team after Ronaldo’s imminent move to Spain.

Do you think United should spend big? And if so…who would  be on your wish list?
