Neville Dismisses Boro Link

Posted by Keano! on June 15, 2009

Gary Neville has committed his future to the Red Devil’s, rubbishing reports that he could be about to drop to the Championship with Middlesbrough who are searching for valuable experience. Of ‘that’ generation, only Giggs, Scholes and Gary Neville remain, with Butt, Beckham and Philip Neville all leaving the nest. Giggs and Scholes have been lauded with praise over the last year and more with few recognising how important the club captain has been.

Neville has missed a lot of action due to injury, and some United fans believe his time has come, but as ever, Neville is determined to stay at United and fight for a starting place in Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

Speaking to The People, Neville explained,

"I played a good number of games last season and I hope that continues next season because playing for this club is as special to me now as it was when I first pulled on the shirt as a schoolboy."

With Wes Brown impressing last year and the emergence of Brazilian teenager Rafael Da Silva, Neville will have to be on song if he is to push the young blood out of the way and it’s a challenge he is more the ready to tackle. He also stated that with the physical demands on full backs in today’s game, he has had to adapt his game slightly and it is very different to those wonderful links along the right wing with David Beckham just ahead.

"Full-backs have an important role, particularly at United, in terms of the way we attack and the way in which there’s a transition from defence through our full-backs to attack," he said.

"The way you see guys like Patrice Evra and Rafael Da Silva attacking, they are more like wingers who can defend, they aren’t just full-backs any more.

"The way in which the modern full-back like Rafael, Fabio and Patrice play is fantastic to watch. I don’t do that in the same eye-catching way as they do, but you understand the changes and development in the game and the way I’ve had to adapt."

Gary, who lifted United’s 18th League title last month, is expected to move into the coaching department at Old Tarfford when he hangs up his boots. When that will be is anyone’s guess, but some are speculating that next Summer could well see a mass exodus from United with Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Edwin Van Der Sar, Gary himself and even Sir Alex all reportedly preparing for their final year at United.

Lets hope its all just speculation and no truth to it.
